Elon Musk's Neuralink is planning to initiate the placement of brain implants in 2023
Elon Musk revealed his plans after his company Neuralink announced a few days ago that it had obtained permission from the US regulator.
PARIS. The controversial owner of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, stated on Friday that he wants to perform neural implants in a human this year, during a stellar presentation to around 3,600 fans at the major European technology conference in Paris.
During his two-hour conference at VivaTech, the billionaire showcased his unabashed visionary image and offered advice for success to start-up entrepreneurs and aspiring businessmen fascinated by his persona.
In contrast, following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the day, Musk said nothing about the possible installation of a Tesla factory in France, despite promising in mid-May that his company would make "significant investments" in the country.
But the promise has not materialized, and Tesla could end up choosing Spain, nearly four years after selecting Berlin for its first European factory.
During his conference, Musk announced his desire to see a human with neural implants from his company Neuralink by 2023, as it has just obtained authorization to conduct trials in the United States.
At the end of last month, the magnate's own company announced that it had obtained permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the office that oversees products, medicines, and surgical procedures in the country. The regulator, which had denied approval last year, has not confirmed Neuralink's announcement.
"Later this year, we will perform our first microchip implant in a human for someone with a form of tetraplegia," Musk revealed yesterday.
The purpose of these microchips is to enable direct communication between brains and computers to assist paralyzed individuals or those suffering from neurological disorders.
During his show, in front of an enthusiastic audience, Musk also advocated for a Twitter free from all censorship and believed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could unleash an apocalypse for humanity.
"If we are hit by an apocalypse triggered by artificial intelligence, I think I would like to be alive at that moment," he said with a smile.
Musk traveled to Rome on Monday to meet with Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, with whom he discussed "crucial issues" such as the "risks of Artificial Intelligence" and "birth rate," according to the leader.
